McGill College gold "Major Hirim Mills" Medal 1882 Select UNC, 45mm/40.22g. By Joseph & Allan Wyon. Obv: College arms. Rev: 4-line inscription inside wreath. Deep reflectivity exists in the fields and frost adorns the raised surfaces, imparting an attractive cameo appearance. Warm orange-gold over both sides generates exceptional eye-appeal. Struck with the name of (Major) Hiram Mills (1796-1882), an American-born philanthropist, who on his death left $43,000 to McGill College in order this establish a gold award medal, a scholarship and an endowed chair in the classic field. A very rare medal in gold.
