Costa Rica
Republic Type IV Countermarked 4 Reales (1846) Fair Details (Holed) NGC, San Jose mint, KM50. C/S: XF Strong. Countermarked over a Guatemala cob 4 Reales 1733-46 G-J. Counterstamping 1, 2, 4 and 8 Reales was authorized by decree in Costa Rica on October 15, 1846 to distinguish them from circulating counterfeits, and the use of this unusual host coin for this issue is exceptionally rare (rated as RRR in Jara's work on the early issues of the Guatemala mint) as the 4 Reales were already one of the most elusive denominations of the cob series to be found. The host coin itself is recognizable but holed and mostly worn; however, the counterstamps are remarkably strongly applied and remain fully-defined and crisp. A remarkable rarity and one for which we expect strong attention from specialist collectors. One of the few other known specimens sold as part of our auction 3046, April 2016, realizing $8,500 hammer.
