Menelik II Proof 1/8 Birr EE 1887 (1894)-A Proof, Paris mint, KM2, Obv. Crowned bust of Menelik II right. Rev. Lion facing left with left foreleg holding banner. Fully mirrored fields, with gray and gold patina. Light marks are noted. This example, and the following 1/2 Birr, and 1 Birr, are part of a four-piece set previously sold in our 2005 Long Beach Signature sale, All of the coins offered are obviously Paris mint Proof, or Specimen, strikes. These were the first issue of the new King and it is quite normal that special strikes were produced by the issuing Paris mint. These 1894 special strikes are rare and seldom offered.
