Louis XIV gold Louis d'or 1696-(?) MS61 PCGS, Paris mint, KM302.1, Fr-433, Gad-252. Reused Flan. An exceptionally intriguing example. Whilst sometimes the act of overstriking with later dies obliterates the host coin, here we see some tenacious details remaining; consequently, the attribution of this specimen to the Paris mint is somewhat suspect. Clearly the host coin (A Louis d'Or of Louis XIII) has the mintmark 'A' for Paris as this is evident through the bust of Louis XIV; however, the bust of of Louis XIII is still extremely apparent on the reverse (as is the date, 1642) and the detail of his hair has disguised the later mintmark. It could be a D, denoting its mint as Lyon. To have this level of detail from both planchet strikings as well as a Mint State certification is superb, and renders this coin a rarity worthy of collector attention and further research.
