Louis Philippe (1830-1849) Gilt Brass Pattern 10 Francs (1830) SP61 PCGS, Paris mint, Maz-1083. Obverse uniface, by Joseph-Francois Domard. Offered separately is the reverse uniface for this coin. This rare and unusual pattern represents an early attempt to introduce the 10 franc coin, 20 years before the first official currency issue emerged in 1850. Clearly executed with considerable skill, the finely rendered laureate head of Louis Philippe rests on a mirrorlike field of deep and convincing gold; sadly, this beautiful design was never to be replicated for circulation, as by the time the 1850 10 franc piece was produced, it bore the head of the then monarch, Napoleon III. Truly an intriguing and attractive piece of French numismatic history.
