Bavaria. Maximilian I gold 5 Ducat 1640 MS63 NGC, Munich mint, KM269, Fr-196. Commemorating the completion of new fortifications around Munich. Obv. Maximilian standing slightly right, fully clad in armor, holding scepter and resting hand upon orb set upon altar to right; all within ornate hallway. Rev. Veduta of Munich within the fortifications; above, the Madonna seated facing among the clouds, holding Holy Infant and scepter; cherub to left and right. An exceedingly attractive and choice example of this medallic type, featuring highly artistic engraving and gleaming surfaces, along with full minty brilliance and a captivating golden-orange tone. Compare to an extremely similar specimen, an NGC MS64, which realized a hammer of $46,000 in our 2017 NYINC auction (sale 3051, lot 34178). A truly superlative piece.
