William III gold Guinea 1695 AU53 NGC, KM488.1, S-3458. Certainly, a conservative certification for a wonderful example of this scarce guinea. We invite comparison to a comparable specimen graded MS61 NGC, part of our auction 3048 in August 2016, which achieved $6,500 hammer; this present offering appears to be at least its equal, if not sharper in elements of William's hair and the lion of Nassau in the center of the reverse. The fully-defined features of this coin are overlayed with a gentle peach tone, and one would imagine this will darken over time into a dramatic and appealing red. The fields seem free of any severe contact marks or scratches, and indeed the overall quality of this coin is far above what is average for the somewhat softly-struck series of the 1690s. A startlingly attractive coin, and sure to please its next owner.
