George III Proof "Cartwheel" 2 Pence 1797-SOHO PR64 Brown NGC, KM619, S-3776, P-1069. A beautifully prepared and preserved proof. The gleam of the sleek reflective surfaces catch the eye instantly, as does the intricate portrait of George III which is of a softer, more matte appearance in contrast to the reflective backdrop. The differing depths between the field and the matte Cartwheel rim provide an immensely satisfying effect to the eye, as the steam-milling process which debuted through this series allowed a much deeper and more defined striking as is observed here. Inconsequential contact marks are smattered across the fields, but do not take away from the eye-appeal of this exquisite piece.
