George III Proof Pattern 2 Pence 1805-SOHO PR64 PCGS, Peck-1313 (Very scarce). Struck in bronzed copper. By William J. Taylor. Edge plain. An interesting die-pairing prepared by Taylor from salvaged Soho mint dies, this charming coin sees a c.1804 Bank of England dollar obverse married to an edited c.1797 reverse. The striking itself is exceptionally sharp Soho-quality, the color deep chocolaty brown with a subtle gleam befitting of a bronzed proof; there are two light marks in the reverse field, but these do not detract from the overall eye-appeal of this superb piece. Both attractive and scarce, this is a seldom-seen offering in a high level of certification. A silver variety of this same die-pairing in our auction 3061, January 2018, realized an impressive $26,000 hammer.
