George III gold Proof Guinea 1774 PR64 Cameo NGC, KM604, S-3728, WR-95 (rare). By Thomas Pingo. Edge plain. Considered more elegantly engraved, more detailed and in higher relief than the 5th Bust or "Spade" guinea type, this remarkable specimen shows a masterful execution by Pingo. Of a higher certification and more attractive than most, a vivid contrast is achieved through the bright, reflective fields backlighting the frosty cameo portrait of the more-mature King George in the 36th year of his life, the first year of issuance for this fourth bust type. On careful examination, a very light but appealing patina resides in the fields, transforming lemon-gold into a darker, aged-gold effect. The well-known die-bulge appears on the reverse field at about 4:00 near the legend, as do die-polish lines combined with light cabinet friction; however, these do not distract the viewer from the marvelous eye-appeal this captivating example boasts. An elite example of this proof Guinea and an exceptional offering, and sure to garner the bidder attention it deserves.
