Great Britain
George III gold Sovereign 1817 MS6+ NGC, KM674, S-3785. The first year of issue for this short-lived series, not to mention this iconic denomination as a whole. There is something about the design of this type, perhaps Pistrucci's masterfully-engraved depiction of St. George slaying the dragon, or the newly-round and precise shape of the coin after the Great Recoinage of 1816, which appears absolutely marvelous in high grades such as this specimen. A stunning example, a soft luster enveloping the planchet and breathing life into its silky surfaces, the motifs impressed firmly and sharply, the color a gorgeous lemon-honey gold. An offering which is hard to beat, a superb representative of the type, and sure to impress the advanced collector of high-grade British gold.
