Victoria Proof "Gothic" Florin 1851 PR63 NGC, Royal mint, KM746.1, S-3891, ESC-2818 (R5). Milled edge. The key to the Victorian florin series and an extraordinarily rare coin in itself, PCGS and NGC show just two examples graded; this, and another plain edged example graded PF64 NGC offered as part of our auction 3037 January 2015 where it realized $22,000 hammer. Quite apart from its extreme rarity, however, this coin stands alone as an absolutely sublime specimen. The fields are as smooth and clear as water on a calm day; on inspection, lighting flashes of blue-white luster crackle across their matte surfaces illuminating the pristine devices, the crowned cruciform shields, and Victoria's young, 'Gothic' bust. The dark, argent gray of the centers turns an icy cobalt as it meets the peripherals. There are virtually no detracting points whatsoever save from the lightest of handling marks visible under magnification. Hailed by some as the most beautiful design in all of British coinage, this first year example of the Gothic florin is one for the most elite of collections, and worthy of a premium bid.
