Papal States. Pius IX gold 50 Lire Year XXII // 1868-R MS67 NGC, Rome mint, KM1388, Fr-279, Pag-523. Mintage: 1,172. Miraculous, nearly as-struck quality, with pinpoint detail that exists from the centers to the outer dentils, fresh fields that possess alluring prooflike qualities and raised surfaces that display delicate frost. In addition, a stunning absence of marks are visible and orange-gold tone blends seamlessly over both sides. Very likely the finest survivor extant of this two-year type, with nice Uncirculated examples appearing from time to time, but coins in Gem condition being very rare. Inspection of the NGC and PCGS population reports confirms this observation, with no examples of the type, other than the present coin, exceeding the MS65 grade. A unique opportunity as such for the collector that demands the finest.
