Charles & Johanna "Early Series" 3 Reales ND (1536-42) R-·M·/·M· VF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-Unl., Cal-Unl., Nesmith-Unl. 29.5mm/9.42g. 3 Dots/Annulets variety. A presumably unique, never-before offered, variety of the three reales denomination, similar in design composition to Nesmith-5c with its И and A that replace Gothic forms, yet modified to add three annulets in triangular arrangement around Francisco del Rincon's 'R' assayer initial. As is often the case with sea-salvaged examples, the surfaces of this piece are flat gray in color with even granularity over the surfaces. Despite the granularity, the details remain quite strong, with a few areas of softness in the legends, but central design elements that are bold and without any strike doubling of significance. Worthy of more study, this piece re-writes what is known about 3 reales, and potentially allows for deeper understanding of the emission sequencing for this fleeting denomination. As the only example of this discovery piece found the Santo Domingo wreck, a truly incredible opportunity for the scholarly collector!
