Charles & Johanna "Early Series" 3 Reales ND (1536-42) R/·M·-·M· VF Details (Edge Damage) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0014, Cal-102, Nesmith-5d. 29.5mm/9.90g. 3 Bars/No Waves variety. Likely the last variety struck of the three reales denomination, with this issue having the unique distinction of having three bars for the denomination instead of the customary dots. Of the three bars variety, this is easily the finest we have encountered, with a no surface granularity from saltwater exposure as well as a very bold portrayal of the pillars, denomination and 'R' assayer initial; strike doubling is however noted on the corresponding shield. Widely spaced marks that appear to simulate milling are observed on the edge, but their presence interferes little with the appearance. Altogether, a wholesome piece, deserving of exalted placement in a most-advanced cabinet of Mexican coinage.
