Charles & Johanna "Late Series" 4 Reales ND (1542-57) M-R AU Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0018, Cal-Unl., Nesmith-70. 32mm. Evenly toned in graphite-gray color with sharply rendered central designs and a mintmark 'M' and assayer initial 'R' that remains bolder than any other we've encountered. While presumed extant to Nesmith, he had seen no examples at the time his book was published, and to this day, the M-R combination remains incredibly elusive. This coin, with light loss due to saltwater exposure along the legend below the left portion of the fields, is similar overall to the Kent Ponterio specimen that last sold in a 2012 Sedwick auction for $2600 hammer.
