Charles & Johanna "Late Series" 4 Reales ND (1542-57) M-S XF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0018, Cal-Unl., Nesmith-78. 33mm. Placed on a broad flan with full legends and displaying variegated brown and silver tone over both sides. Some strike doubling, mostly confined to the centers, is noted along with a mixture of hairlines from an previous improper attempt at cleaning. Despite its flaws, perhaps finest known quality for this very rare 'S' assayer variety, it being only the second we've seen, the other being a heavily corroded, barely legible example that appeared in a 2012 Stack's Bowers auction (Sale 164 - Lot 2674) and brought $550 hammer.
