Philip V gold Cob 2 Escudos 1715 Mo-J MS61 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM53.2, Cal-351. 20mm/6.7g. Absent evidence of circulation, yet displaying softened luster that is likely the result of its resting place on top of other coins that were recovered from the 1715 Plate Fleet shipwreck. Rather exciting however is the ease with which the date is determined, the final digit being complete and the '171' being partial. A well-centered reverse cross further contributes to the appearance. The first we have offered, this date seems to appear at an approximate 1:25 ratio versus the 1714 date. An important coin for the specialist thus.
