Mexico
Republic 2 Pesos 1921 Mo MS65 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM462. Independence Centennial, struck to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. It is not simply high grade that makes a coin beautiful, but the design itself and its engraving; and this is a prime example of these factors combining to make a piece which is visually stunning. The masterfully executed devices, Liberty standing with her arm holding a victory wreath raised triumphantly and an eagle vanquishing a rattlesnake, are as pristine as when first struck, the planchet imbued with full, icy luster, a slight russet tone encroaching from the margins. The overall impact of this coin bowls the viewer over, and needs to be seen in hand to be properly appreciated.
