Puerto Rico
Spanish Colony. Alfonso XIII 40 Centavos 1896-PGV MS62 NGC, Madrid mint, KM23. A lightly toned and wondrous example of this scarce regular coinage issue---exceedingly difficult to acquire in such a dazzling state of preservation. The steel gray surfaces are balanced by hints of russet gold, creating a lovely canvass. A light metal impurity across the left pillar is noted, but does not detract from its charm. A similar piece, an NGC MS63, realized a hammer of $6,500 in our 2017 NYINC auction (sale 3051, lot 34401).
