Ancients
PAMPHYLIA. Aspendus. Ca. 212-181 BC. AR/AE fourrée tetradrachm (16.90 gm). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Ancient forgery, in the names and types of Alexander III the Great of Macedon. Head of Heracles right, in lion skin headdress / Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter, ΑΣ in left field. Cf. Price 2876-2912 (with dates below throne). An intriguing and quite convincing contemporary forgery of the ubiquitous broad-flan Alexander issues of Asia Minor, detectable only by virtue of the rather sketchy style, particularly on the reverse.
