Ancients
Germanicus, father of Caligula (died AD 19). AE as (9.41 gm). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5, lamination. Rome (or branch mint?), under Gaius 'Caligula,' AD 37-38. Bare head of Germanicus left / C CΛESI(sic) ΛVG GERMΛNICVS PON M TR POT around large S · C. Rare, possibly unrecorded variety! RIC (Gaius) 35 variant (legends). Glossy brown patina, small reverse lamination near letter C.
NGC's attribution to a possible branch mint, instead of Rome, seems to be based on the slightly unusual style of portraiture, which differs somewhat than that found on most issues, the use of Λ instead of A on both sides of the coin, and the slightly misspelled reverse legend (CΛESI instead of CAESAR).
