Crusader States
Anonymous Christian Imitative silver Dirham ND (Mid to Late 13th Century) Choice XF,  Akka (Acre) mint, 2.69g, CCS-15. A truly fascinating piece of history demonstrating the unique interactions and exchanges between European and Levantine culture effected by the Crusades of the 11th to 13th centuries. Likely struck in the period after the spring of 1250--when Odo, bishop of Châteauroux, reported to Pope Innocent IV that crusaders had been striking imitative Islamic dirhams bearing Muslim formulae--following Innocent's prohibition of the striking of Christian coins with the name of Muhammad, this piece bears remarkably strong detail in the central legends while the peripheries remain worn as is typical for these coins. Proclaiming Christian dogmatic creeds in near fluent Arabic, the central obverse legend proclaims "One God, one faith, one Baptism" (Allah wahid huwa al-iman wahid al-ma'mudiyya wahid), while the reverse field states "The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: One Divinity" (al-ab, wa'l-ibn wa'l-rih al-qudus ilah wahid), and the margins "His is the glory forever and ever, amen, amen" (lahu al-majd ila abad al-abadin amin amin). A very rare opportunity that surely demands potential bidders to place their best bids.
