Strassbourg. Imperial Free City silver Klippe "Reformation Centennial Jubilee" Ducat 1617 MS63 PCGS, Whiting-93, Diemer-697. A surprisingly problem-free, it slightly off-center, example of this silver striking of a traditionally gold denomination (see Fr-235 for a slightly different gold example) issued on the centenary of the Protestant Reformation. While clear die polish lines strut proudly across subtly golden surfaces, neigh a blemish appears on the fields. Although similar specimens have sold at auction in the past for fairly modest sums, this is the only example we've been able to find in our research that features cross pattées below the date on both obverse and reverse as well as above the Roman numeral IV (most others, including the gold issues, exhibit more floral crosses an a dot below the 1517 date). This suggests that this piece may in fact be a pattern issue that was not adopted in the final gold ducat design.
