Mughal Empire. Muhammad Jahangir Zodiac Rupee AH 1027 Year 13 (1617) AG Details (Damaged) NGC, Ahmadabad mint, KM150.5. An exquisite and highly-prized type even in as low a grade as the present offering, this extremely rare item is among the jewels of the Mughal period and represents a fascinating period in the history of the Indian subcontinent in particular and in the Islamic world as a whole. A clear embodiment of Jahangir's tendency towards experimentation and distaste for the orthodox beliefs of the Muslim clergy, this series introduce a myriad of types displaying wildlife (as well as a few extraordinarily rare example portraying the young ruler himself) to the chagrin of the pious. As a result, much of his coinage was recalled and melted down during the reign of son Shah Jahan, making the pieces that survive both scarce and coveted. This particular piece displays a bull (Taurus) laying down before the rising sun and features couplets honoring the emperor and his father. Krause lists even VG examples at a catalog price of $1,500.
