British India. Bengal Presidency gold Mohur AH 1202 Year 19 (1807) [Frozen Date] XF Details (Mount Removed, Bent) NGC, Murshidabad mint, KM113. Oblique Milled Edge/Crescent Mintmark variety. A pleasing example of this extremely popular type with all of the noted marks typical to this immobilized series. Both the overall pattern of scattered handling marks, as well as the mount removal (around 12 o'clock) and the slight bend in the flan, suggest that this is a clear ex-jewelry piece--a nearly ubiquitous aspect of these issues that rather than detract (as is usually the case with mounted coins), adds allure. Struck in the name of Shah Alam II (d. 1806), these coins reportedly became beloved by Indian women, leading to a flurry of jeweler's imitative types including a silver issue of with Mohur-style legends.
