Islamic Dynasties
Samanid. Nasr II b. Ahmad (AH 301-331 / AD 914-943) gold Dinar AH 302 (AD 914/15) VF - scratches, Nishapur mint, 4.14g, A-1449, ICV-1497, Fr-18e. A very well-centered, if somewhat softly struck and circulated, example of the type, with the legends fully legible and still retaining enough of their original relief to nicely catch oncoming light and produce a stark contrast between darkened high points and soft yellow surfaces. While some light, graffiti-like scratches can be seen over the final words of the kalima on the obverse, they do not prove overly distracting for what is genuinely a well-executed piece. The calligraphy also shows a very pleasing elongated style which nicely fills the flan and keeps individual words and letters nicely proportioned--a trademark of Islamic coinage during the Umayyad and early Abbasid caliphates.
