The Lombards at Beneventum. Grimoald III as Dux with Charlesmagne (788-792). AV Tremissis. Obv. GRIM-+-VAL DX (DX monogram). Crowned, draped and bearded bust facing, holding globus cruciger in right hand. Rev. DOMS four crossed pellets CAR. RX (RX monogram). Cross potent between two pellets; in fields, G-R; VICΔ in exergue. CNI 9. Sambon 419. MEC 1098. AV. g. 1.24 mm. 16.50 R. VF. Grimoald was the younger son of Arichis II and became duke after the death of his father. At the beginning he was a vassal of Charlemagne, the Frankish king, and together they defeated the Byzantines in Sicily, helping Desiderius' son, Adalgis. Soon after, wishing to maintain his independence, Grimoald III resumed the title of Princeps (NAC 93, 1335 note).
