Kings of Pontos. Mithradates VI Eupator, circa 120-63 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 16.66 g, 12 h), year 224 = 74/73 BC, twelfth month (= September). Diademed head of Mithradates VI to right, his hair streaming out behind. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΜΙΘΡΑΔΑΤΟΥ / ΕΥΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ Stag feeding to left; to left, star within crescent above monogram; to right, date, ΔΚΣ; below, month letters, ΙΒ; all within ivy wreath. De Callataÿ pl. XII (D65/R1a). A superb, sharp and lustrous piece, very well struck on an oval, gem-like flan. Some very minor traces of cleaning, otherwise, good extremely fine.
