Hadrian, 117-138. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 34 mm, 30.29 g), Rome, 123. IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG P M TR P COS III Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian to right. Rev. LIBERTAS PVBLICA / SC Libertas seated to left, holding olive branch in her right hand and long scepter in her left. Banti 512. BMC 1192. Cohen -. Hill 243. RIC 583d. With a remarkably large and elegant bust of Hadrian and with an attractive dark green patina. Some minor smoothing in the fields, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Bank Leu in Zürich, probably in the 1950s, but certainly prior to 1975.

The quality of the portrait on this coin is quite simply outstanding in its noble elegance and its large size. It must have a provenance: Dr. Mildenberg acquired a considerable number of old collections during the 1950s (including the great Mazzini collection, split with Ratto), so this coin simply must come from a fairly old collection.
