Leo III the Isaurian, 25 March 717 – 18 June 741. Tremissis, Sardinia (?) 717 – 741, AV 1.29 g. Diademed bust facing, holding globus cruciger and mappa. Rev. ...YEC Cross potent on base, below Θ – S and in exergue, ...IOB. DO –. MIB – cf. 5. Sear – cf. 1522a. Ricotti-Prina – cf. 54.
Apparently unrecorded. A puzzling issue of extreme
interest and About extremely fine
The attribution of this coin to both Leo and Sardinia will need further evidence. We attributed this issue to the reign of Leo relying solely on the style of the portrait and to Sardinia for the presence of the S on the reverse field, although the presence of Θ is without apparent explanation.
