$50 VF Details (A little 3 mm scratch in the field at 5 o'clock).
Metal: Gold.
Territorials. Gold. California. 1852 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. K-11, R.5.
Starting in1849 the gold rush brought to California a large influx of people coming both from the US and abroad. San Francisco became the first center to operate for gold seekers. Due to this growing activity various private minters appeared (and disappeared). Moffat & Co. was the most important one.
As Californians were not satisfied with this situation they asked the government to create a federal branch mint.
In 1850 the provisional United States Assay Office of Gold established in San Francisco. Moffat & Co. ceased their private activity and managed this office under Augustus Humbert supervision (appointed as assayer). The Assay office was authorized to issue $50 to $10,000 "ingots". Humbert arrived in San Francisco in 1851 with dies of the $50 octogonal "slug". Production began in Feb. 1851. In 1852 the Moffat & Co firm reorganized as the official United States Assay Office of Gold. Augustus Humbert remained as assayer.
From 1851 to 1853 Humbert slugs were accepted as currency.
The K-11 $50 slug was one of the last issues produced by Moffat before the reorganization of the company.
This desirable and appealing item is an opportunity to own a significant historical piece of the gold rush.
