SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Cleopatra Thea & Antiochos VIII, 126/5-121/0 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 16.52 g, 12 h), Antiochia on the Orontes, circa 122-121. Jugate busts of Kleopatra Thea, diademed, veiled and wearing a stephane, and Antiochos VIII, diademed, to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗ[Σ] / ΚΛΕΟΠΑΤΡΑΣ - ΚΑΙ / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ Zeus seated left, holding Nike in his right hand and long scepter with his left; to outer left, IE; below throne, crescent. SC 2262.1a. A sharply struck example with two splendid portraits. Traces of overstriking on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
This coin is a so-called flip-over double strike, meaning that the flan was not removed between two strikes but flipped over, which resulted in traces of the reverse legend (ΠΑΤΡ) being visible on Antiochos' chin.
