CARIA. Antiochia ad Maeandrum. Gallienus, 253-268. Hexassarion (?) (Bronze, 32 mm, 13.68 g, 6 h). AY•K•Π•ΓAΛΛIHNOC Radiate, helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Gallienus to left, holding spear and shield. Rev. ANTIOXЄΩ-N Bridge of six arches spanning the Maeander, with monumental gateway to left and river-god Maeander reclining left on bridge, holding reed. BMC 57 var. (stork on gateway). SNG Leypold 797. SNG München 92 var. (stork on gateway). SNG von Aulock 2430 var. (stork on gateway). A well struck and unusually complete example with exceptional details. Somewhat smoothed, otherwise, extremely fine.
The monumental bridge shown on the reverse of this coin is probably the bridge mentioned, en passant, by Strabo, before he goes on to praise the famous dried figs of the Carian Antiochia (Strabo XIII 4,15).
