In order to better protect the areas of Holland and Utrecht from Spanish plundering, the States-General blockaded the city, a form of siege warfare. Victory was achieved when the commander, George van Lalaing, employed the strategic advice offered by Johan van den Kornput, a young Dutch engineer, cartographer, and military strategist.
