SCANDINAVIA: Unknown issuer, ca. 1150-1400, AV burial bracteate (0.80g), seated figure, long hair curled slightly upwards at the point, holding knife-like object in his left hand, trident in his right hand (perhaps replacing sword and scepter), rather crudely engraved, VF, RRR. This piece was allegedly found somewhere in Scandinavia. The general style resembles the bracteates of various locations in north-central Germany, such as Saxony. Since there was no gold coinage in either Northern Germany or Scandinavia at the time of prototypes (ca. 1100-1300), it is likely that this item was locally produced as a burial piece.
Estimate: 400-600 USD
