EASTERN SISTAN: Ya'qub, ca. 820s-830s, AR drachm (3.29g), SK (Sijistan), ND, A-E90, countermarked ya'qub / ja'iz on anonymous type 89T (but probably without 'adl in the 4th quadrant of the obverse), with two additional previously unknown countermarks, one with an unread name above the Arabic word ja'iz, the other very small, with undetermined word or symbol inside, VF, RRRR. The only other example bearing the "ya'qub ja'iz" countermark sold in Stephen Album Auction 27, Lot 124, for $900. The reference to the founder of the Saffarid dynasty, Ya'qub al-Layth, is very tentative, and it is likely that the fellow named in this countermark is a different Ya'qub.
Estimate: 300-400 USD
