AWADH: Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856, AE nazarana ¼ paisa (3g), Lucknow, AH1270 year 8, KM-347var, D&L-, special strike, with full border, the regnal year 8 recut over 7, choice EF, RRR. Struck with special dies of the finest quality, comparable to the finest silver & gold coins struck at Lucknow during the same year. The superb style and amazingly accurate weights of the quarter paisa (3.00g), half paisa (6.02g), and paisa (12.04g) suggests that this series was produced to represent the quality possible at the Lucknow mint for future copper coinage. However, the British attempt to annex Awadh led to the Great Revolt of 1857 and the resulting termination of the state of Awadh.
