THRACE, Mesambria. Circa 225-175 BC. AR Tetradrachm (36mm, 16.51 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on ornate throne with thunderbolt on rear leg; in left field, crested Corinthian helmet right; ΛA below throne, monogram in exergue. Karayotov I 68 (O23/R77); Price 1032 corr. (thunderbolt on leg); HGC 3, 1567. VF, toned, flan crack, overstruck on uncertain type. Very rare, Karayotov notes five examples (including the one in Pella), one in CoinArchives.
