THRACE, Perinthus. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Pentassarion (31mm, 16.80 g, 11h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right, slight drapery on shoulder; breastplate decorated with gorgoneion / Hermes standing left, holding purse and caduceus; to left at feet, bird standing left with wings folded. Cf. Mouchmov 1018 and pl. XI, 3 (Nicopolis ad Istrum; bird clearly a cockerel), Philippopolis –; Varbanov 1203. Good VF, green patina, deposits around edge, minor smoothing. Extremely rare, Varbanov knew of only other example of this type (in a private collection), as well as an unspecified variety in the O. Gavrailov collection. None in CoinArchives.
