Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (16.4mm, 3.74 g, 12h). Legionary issue. Rome mint. Struck AD 193. Laureate head right / LEG I [ITAL], aquila between two signa; TR P CO[S] in exergue. RIC IV 3; RSC 257. VF, toned, traces of verdigris, reverse struck slightly off center. Very rare.

The attibution of this coin to LEG I ITAL is confirmed by the Melcher/DeVicci specimen that we sold in CNG 63, lot 1396, which shares the same reverse die with the present specimen.
