Illuminated Psalter Page. Northern France, from the reign of Philip Augustus, 1179-1223 AD. Vellum page with gold leaf, red and blue elaborately illuminated initials E and S plus 17 other large capitals in blue and gold. 21 lines of Latin text in angular Gothic script on each side. 18 intricate red, blue and gold leaf line fillers. 9.25" x 6.5". This previously unknown work is of the highest artistic quality and has such a lavish use of gold leaf, it leads us to suspect that the work was made to order for a member of the court. A museum piece!
