Sicily, 'Kainon' Æ23. Circa 360-340 BC. Griffin springing left / Horse prancing left, reins loose; [KAINON in exergue]. Campana 1; CNS 1; HGC 2, 509; SNG ANS 1169; AMB 309 (all as Kainon). 12.35g, 23mm, 6h.
Very Fine. Attractive patina.
Not identifiable with a known mint in Sicily, the Kainon issues have traditionally been attributed to Alaisa. However, the different fabric of several issues suggests that they were struck at more than one mint, perhaps by mercenaries in the employ of Dione of Leontini.
