Kings of Galatia, Amyntas Æ28. 37-25 BC. Draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder; [AY monogram before] / BAΣIΛEΩΣ AMYNTOY, stag standing right. SNG France 2371; RPC I 3503. 3.39g, 28mm, 12h.
Very Fine.
On many examples of this issue, Artemis has the distinct features of the Egyptian queen Kleopatra VII, consort of Marc Antony (cf. Kölner Münzkabinett 106, 173; CNG E-358, 152). It is supposed that Amyntas, whom had been raised to be king of Galatia by Antony in 37/6 BC and ruled until his death in 25 BC, caused this to be done in deference to Antony and Kleopatra.
