Samaria(?), uncertain mint AR Stater. Circa 372-332 BC. Winged sphinx, with bearded and crowned head of Persian king, seated left / Winged, bearded and horned monster crouching left. Overstruck on a Satrap/Archer stater of Tarsos dated to circa 425-400 BC. For examples of the overtype from the same pair of dies cf. Roma XIV, lot 399 ('Samaria?'), Savoca Premium 2, lot 79 ('Samaria', this coin), Roma E-41, lot 347 ('Samaria?') and Leu Numismatik 2, lot 291 (Cilicia, Uncertain); for similar obverse iconography cf. Y. Meshorer & S. Qedar, Samarian Coinage, Jerusalem 1999, 24-29 and BMC Palestine p. 180, 26 (Philsto-Arabian); for the undertype cf. SNG Levante 60. 10.74g, 25mm, 11h.

Very Fine. Elements of undertype visible. Unpublished in the standard references and extremely rare, this being the fourth known example.

From the collection of D.I., Germany, purchased before 1992.

The iconography of this issue is very similar to that of the coinage of Samaria, which features plenty of winged monsters and human-headed animals. There is no reason why the Samarians should not have minted staters on the Persian weight standard of about 11.00g alongside with the well documented 1/3 and 1/4 staters (drachmai), 1/12 staters (obols) and 1/32 staters (hemiobols).
