Faustina II (wife of M. Aurelius) AR Denarius. Rome, circa AD 165-170. FAUSTINA AVGSTA (sic), draped bust right / VESTA, Vesta seated left, holding palladium and transverse sceptre. RIC 737 (Aurelius); MIR 18, 44-4b; RSC 286. 3.53g, 18mm, 6h.

Good Very Fine. Lightly toned.

Having been struck with a reverse die that can be linked to other genuine examples of the type, this denarius must be considered to be the product of the Imperial mints even with the clear misspelling of AVGVSTA on the obverse. That this error has remained unknown except on this example can be attributed to the swift removal of the problematic die from use, making this obverse very rare indeed.
