CELTIC GAUL. First Century B.C. AR irregular quinarius. 1.65 gm. 15 mm. Imitative of Roman Republican issue. Northwest Gaul, Jersey. Stylized head of Roma right with large eye / Horse leaping right, image (Victory?) above. Cf. de la Tour pl xxvi. Near Very Fine; reverse good Very Fine and beautifully toned; irregular flan.

Cf. A.L.T. McCammon's "Currencies of the Anglo-Norman Isles," pp. 45-66, for a discussion of mystic Celtic iconography. This piece is reminiscent of the Armorican staters from the Channel Islands and Northwest Gaul, where for example the figure above the horse may be a fragmentary charioteer, or a monster. Fascinating coin. (Cf. Lot 25 also.)
