ANGLO-GALLIC. Henry VI. 1422-1453. AV salut d'or. 3.22 gm. 26 mm. Leopard mm. Rouen. The Annunciation: the Virgin Mary nimbate, standing facing, receiving tablet inscribed AVE from the Archangel Gabriel; Shields of France (left) and England (right) side by side, before; pellet stops / Latin cross, lis and lion passant on either side, within a tressure; mullet stops. S. 8164. Elias 270C. W&F 386F. Good Very Fine; clipped; slight bend.
During this turbulent era, England saw the "War of the Roses," the Hundred Years War with France, and Joan of Arc. The salut d'or, minted in French territory while still under English control, illustrates medieval religious imagery, the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a large Latin cross.
