INDIA, Kushan Empire. Kanishka I. Circa AD 127-151. Æ Tetradrachm (26mm, 17.14 g, 12h). Main mint in Kapisha (Begram?). Late phase. Kanishka standing facing, head left, holding goad and scepter, sacrificing over altar to left; [flame at shoulder] / Seated Maitreya Buddha: Buddha seated cross-legged facing on stool, hand raised in gesture of abhayamudrā and holding kamanḍalu/kuṇḍikā (water pot). Cribb, Buddha 77-82 (dies w/21); MK 791; ANS Kushan –; Donum Burns 178. Near VF, earthen green patina, cleaning marks. An attractive example of this popular type. A similar example in Triton XVIII (lot 851) realized $1300 on a $500 estimate.
