Napoleon I. Pair of 'First Military Campaign in Italy' brass Medalets 1796 XF/UNC, Henn. 763. 24mm. 1796 marked the first year of Napoleon's fame as a military leader, appointed to command the French army of Italy in March of that year. These medalets were likely of private production and are thus somewhat modestly executed; interestingly, they are from two completely different pairs of dies, the first more crudely produced and weakly struck, the second far finer in style. For the collector of Napoleonic medals these are certainly amongst the first to bear Napoleon's image and thus are vital to the series as a whole.
